ABSTRACT: This study aims to examine challenges that students faces in their skills in using Filipino language in public speaking, focusing on psychological, social and academic challenges experienced by students. It also seeks to determine whether there are significant differences in the challenges faced by students based on their sex, year level, and first language. The study employed descriptive research design and utilized total enumeration sampling, involving seventy-four (74) students taking BSED Major in Filipino in the College of Teacher Education at Western Mindanao State University. The data were collected through survey questionnaire and analyzed using statistical tools such as weighted mean, frequency distribution, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed that there are psychological, social, and academic challenges experienced by the students but were not major concern, there were challenges related to confidence, appropriate vocabulary usage and influenced of other languages. It is recommended that there should be communication programs in speaking using Filipino language to strengthen and enhance students’ competence and confidence in public discourse.
