ABSTRACT: This study examined the level of grammatical competence of students enrolled in the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino, from first year to fourth year. It aimed to determine the students’ strengths and weaknesses in key grammatical components, namely Phonology, Morphology, Vocabulary, and Syntax. Statistical tools such as One-way ANOVA and Tukey Post-Hoc Test were utilized to assess differences in competence across year levels. The results revealed that the students’ overall grammatical competence was “Proficient,” with Syntax emerging as their strongest area, while the other components were rated as “Moderate.” The findings also showed a gradual increase in grammatical competence as students advanced in their academic year, indicating growth in linguistic knowledge and experience. These results affirm that systematic instruction and continuous exposure to language contribute significantly to the development of linguistic competence. Although the students exhibited a solid grammatical foundation, the study suggests the need for more targeted instruction in specific areas to further strengthen and refine their grammatical skills.
