ABSTRACT: This study aims to determine the level of anxiety in learning the Filipino language and to examine its relationship to the academic skills of Junior High School students at the Western Mindanao State University–Laboratory High School. The research employed a quantitative design using the descriptive correlational method and involved eighty (80) selected students who responded to an adapted questionnaire based on the original instrument developed by Bernal (2001). The study examined three forms of anxiety— communication anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, and test anxiety using statistical tools such as weighted mean, Pearson correlation coefficient, and independent sample t-test. The results showed that the students experienced a moderate level of anxiety in learning Filipino. It was also found that although there was a weak but positive relationship between anxiety levels and academic proficiency, this relationship did not reach statistical significance. This indicates that anxiety cannot be considered a strong predictor of students’ academic performance in learning the Filipino language. Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening pedagogical interventions and academic support programs to help reduce anxiety and enhance students’ confidence and competence in using Filipino.
