Deictic Analysis of Thematic issues in KamaNu and Karimi’s Kimeru Song and Dance lyrics

ABSTRACT : This study looked at deixis in the Kimeru song and dance lyrics by KamaNu and Karimi, as a tool of deciphering the meaning of words and utterances, with a view of examining the thematic issues through these expressions. The study adopted a descriptive qualitative approach utilizing a descriptive research design underpinned by Grice’s theory of Conversational Implicature. Data were collected from both Meru and Nairobi counties, Kenya, in social functions and entertainment joints patronised by the two Meru Artists. Twelve songs, six from each artist were generated through video recording, structured interviews, and note taking and analyzed qualitatively. The study established that deixis in Kimeru song and dance lyrics by KamaNu and Karimi express important information ranging from sociocultural issues to ideological and identity issues and therefore, carry implicit messages rather than explicit and can be interpreted uniquely in different contexts. The linguistic value of deixis is clearly delineated. It is hoped that the study will advance the body of knowledge by bringing academic focus to fostering a deeper comprehension of deixis in song and dances. Finally, the study is expected to contribute to the theoretical understanding of the song text as a linguistic entity.
